The most popular surviving form of brassware is probably the domestic candlestick. These were made usually in pairs, and are rarely older than the middle of the seventeenth century. At that time they were on domed circular bases, with a pan to catch drips of wax halfway up the stout central column. Early in the eighteenth century, shaped bases and tall stems with grease-pans at the very top came into fashion. With variations from time to time, this style continued in use until the candle was no longer the principal illuminant in the home.

Metal works
Brass was made into dishes of various sizes, often with embossed designs of Biblical scenes with inscriptions on the borders. These are sometimes still to be seen in use as alms-dishes in churches.

Chandeliers of brass with curved branching arms were made in England and also on the Continent. Many of them date from the seventeenth century, but most have been made more recently in response to continual demand.

Ormolu
This is the French name (literally or moulu, molded gold) for articles and furniture mounts made of bronze and gilded. The piece having been made in bronze was carefully and finely finished by chiseling and polishing and then coated with a mixture of mercury and gold. This amalgam was subjected to heat and the mercury evaporated leaving the gold deposited on the surface. Finally, the gold was burnished where required, or left matt.

The French developed the art of designing and making furniture mounts from ormolu, and were equally proficient at making clock cases, candlesticks, inkstands and other suitable pieces from the same material. Much thought was given to the mounting of porcelain in ormolu, and vases and figures with bases and other enhancements were valued highly for decoration. They fetch high prices today, but only if the mounts are genuinely of the eighteenth century. From 1745 to 1749 a tax was levied on ormolu, and pieces were stamped in a similar manner to silver. The mark is a letter ‘c’ beneath a crown, but as it was in use apparently for no more than four years specimens bearing it is rare.

German ormolu is not dissimilar to French, although seldom as highly finished. In England, the firm of Boulton and Fothergill, of Soho, Birmingham, made good ormolu at the end of the eighteenth century.

Old ormolu is sometimes found with the gilding in good condition, but frequently it is worn away on the surfaces exposed to by wear and tear; its greatest enemy is metal-polish, which should never be used on it. As with Sheffield plate, ormolu can be replated electrically but the appearance of the old cannot be reproduced exactly.

Beside brass ormolu, the French for articles and furniture mounts made of bronze and gilded, developed the French name. They developed the art of designing and making furniture mounts from this ormolu and they were equally proficient at making clock cases, candlesticks, inkstands and other suitable pieces from this material. Then the German and the English followed later on in the eighteenth.

Packaging industry has seen a tremendous shift from ordinary packaging techniques to tailor made shapes, sizes and designs. And packaging labels are used on each and every product – both retail and wholesale. The importance of the right kind of packaging labels for retail products is evident from the fact that it is the packaging label that catches the consumer’s eye. The packaging label can actually make or break a sale.

Most manufacturers who deal in packaging labels carry a ready stock of various sizes of blank labels, adhesive and any other required paraphernalia. Product manufacturers usually get their product labels designed by specialists in the advertising field. A template is prepared and handed over to a packaging label manufacturer who then does the needful. Some packaging label companies offer innovative labels. By choosing such labels product manufacturers can do away with the cost of getting packaging labels designed.

Packaging labels have other uses too. They may be used for identification, inventory control and regulatory compliance. Special use packaging labels include serial number plates, instruction labels, shipping labels, fleet wraps and barcode labels. Product manufacturers should evaluate packaging labels services on the basis of product capabilities, specialties if any, quality requirements and the like.

Product capabilities of packaging label manufacturers include bar or matrix code labels, certification or regulatory code labels, decorative tape, embossed labels or seals, labels for instrument or control panels, laser printable labels, reusable containers, peel off labeling, thermal transfer tape and wash away labeling to name a few.

Laser printable labels are made in such a manner that they are suitable for going through a laser printer. This allows for customer specific labeling requirements to be processed. Labels used for instrumentation and control panels have instructions, graphics, etc. Thermal transfer tape is a type of labeling where a tape is firmly affixed onto the product surface with the use of heat and pressure. Wash away labels are used for containers that see multiple uses as long as they are in a usable condition.

Paper, plastic, metal, rubber and foam are some of the common materials used for the manufacture of packaging labels.

How much money do you have to spend to purchase safety protective equipment to prevent accidents? Try asking yourself how much it will cost you whenever an accident happens: loss of life, loss of work and productivity, insurance claims, material damage. In the modern industrial environment it is more important than ever to make sure you have adequate safety equipment in place. For the health and safety of your employees, and for the benefit of your company from a legal and marketing viewpoint, safety equipment is a must, and if you haven’t already invested in the appropriate safety precautions, you should act with urgency to remedy the situation. This article will look at why it is important that you invest in safety equipment, and how you can begin to get your workforce equipped and protected.

The importance of safety equipment in the workplace should never be underestimated, and in protecting your employees you protect both your name and your productivity. Whether it’s through buying the equipment for your employees or enforcing strict procedures around health and safety, there are numerous ways in which you can promote safety equipment to your staff for use in their everyday work, particularly in dangerous trades. But why is it important for you as an employer to make sure your employees stock up on the correct safety equipment before they begin their work every day? Furthermore, what can you do to actively encourage your workforce to treat their safety equipment as part of the job, to prevent accidents and injury in the workplace?

The first thing you can do as an employer to keep your workforce safe is to implement a uniform and equipment policy, and stick to it. What that means is creating a hard and fast rule that appropriate equipment must be worn or carried or used at all times to avoid injury. If your employees disobey the rule, continue to remind them why it is there – eventually, if you push it hard enough, your employees will act with safety equipment as second nature when in the workplace, leading to a reduction in industrial accidents and staff absences.

As an employer you can acquire safety equipment for your organisation at a much lower unit price than each employee individually, and it may also turn out to be tax deductible, bring double benefits for your business. Look into acquiring bulk safety equipment appropriate to your industry, to benefit from both increased staff loyalty and protection, as well as minimising your potential tax liability at the end of the year as an expenses deductible from profits.

Safety equipment is an essential consideration in many industries, ranging from railwaymen to plumbers to construction workers. Wherever you happen to be working, there will almost certainly be some safety procedures in place, a great number of vocations demand safety as a paramount consideration in the nature of the work.It goes without saying that where a job is dangerous, appropriate safety equipment should be made available at all times. Prevention of accidents is certainly better than cure.

Sheet metal has been used extensively to produce automotive body panels and been decreased with the advent of fiberglass ones, sheet metal is still the most popular material for manufacturing automobiles today. The addition of lasers and robotics to the automobile manufacturing process has further expanded the way that sheet metal is processed.

Lasers

Lasers have been used in production facilities since the 1960′s. Today, they are used to cut, form holes, engrave, weld or heat treat sheet metal for use in automotive production.

Lasers are used in applications that rely on precise measurements and exact alignments.

The adjustment of lasers is measured in micrometers, or millionths of a meter.

There are many different types of lasers used to alter sheet metal and plastics in the automotive industry.

Carbon dioxide laser- uses a mixture of carbon dioxide, nitrogen and helium to produce a continuous laser output

Continuous-wave laser- this type of laser produces light beams continuously rather than in controlled pulses

Excimer laser-emits light in a UV spectrum that is used for producing high quality edges on parts that are prone to cracking or thermal damage; it falls into the category of pulsed-gas lasers

Gas laser-any laser that uses a gas mixture as the lasing medium; common gases are argon and carbon dioxide

Pulsed laser-emits light in controlled pulses and is preferred for thin materials ; it can be used to create intricate details and work in tight corners without burning

Ruby laser-a solid state laser that uses a synthetic ruby crystal with a chromium impurity as the lasing medium

Solid-state laser-a type of laser that uses a crystal or glass as the host for an impurity to produce the lasing action; especially useful for precise measuring and spot welding

Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser-ranges in power from a few milliwatts to more than 400 watts; used for cutting, drilling, heat treating and welding operations

Robotics

Robotics are often used for repetitive tasks, monotonous jobs or those parts of the manufacturing process that are physically difficult or take place in environmentally unpleasant conditions. They are directed by computer programs and perform precise operations without human intervention.

Lasers and robotics have significantly increased the speed at which sheet metal can be processed in the automotive manufacturing process. Continued technological advancements in these two areas will further increase the cost effectiveness and productivity of automotive manufacturing facilities.

Plastic is one of the more commonly used materials for prototyping. Product development engineers, production consultants, inventors, special project leaders, and retail and production prototype specialist turn to plastics to create their moldings and prototypes. This is all different types of plastics.

ABS : a terpolymer made from three monomers, acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. Acrylonitrile and styrene provide chemical resistance, butadiene adds impact resistance and makes the plastic suitable for furniture, computer housings etc.

Acrylic: a hard thermoplastic made from acrylic acid or a derivative of acrylic acid. Best known as a glass substitute, typically under the trade names Perspex, Lucite and Plexiglas.

Amino plastics: Plastics made from ammonia based compounds, namely urea formaldehyde and melamine formaldehyde.

Bakelite : really a trade name but frequently used as a generic name for phenol formaldehyde (phenolic).

Cellophane : A Du Pont trade name for film made from regenerated wood pulp (cellulose).

Cellulose : The fibrous matter in all plant cells, with a long chain molecular structure. The most common sources used for making plastics are cotton fibres and wood pulp

Cellulose acetate: A tough thermplastic made from cellulose in the form of cotton linters, treated with acetic acid and acetic anhydride. Used for many domestic mouldings such as spectacle frames, toothbrush handles, and as transparent packaging film.

Cellulose acetate butyrate: A thermoplastic made from cellulose treated with acetic and butyric acids. Transparent, opaque or coloured, with excellent moulding qualities, used where more moisture resistance and dimensional stability than cellulose acetate is required.

Copolymer: A plastic made by polymerizing two monomers, eg styrene and acrylonitrile .

Elastomer: A synthetic plastic with the flexible properties of rubber.

Epoxy resin: A very tough thermosetting resin used as a coating, or reinforced to make mouldings or laminates.

Ester : A compound produced by the reaction between an acid and an alcohol.

GRP : Glass reinforced polyester, ie polyester resin strengthened by glass fibres, making the resin, which has no strength of its own, into a very tensile material. Widely used to build boats, furniture and cars.

HIPS : High impact polystyrene

LLDPE : Linear low density polyethylene, a new type of low density polythene.

Melalmine : Melamine formaldehyde, a thermoset produced by reacting (triaminotriazine) with formaldehyde. A tough glossy plastic usually strengthened with a filler of wood pulp.

Monomer: A simple low molecular weight compound. Polymerization links monomers together to form high molecular weight polymers.

Nylon: Not one material but a group of very tough and flexible materials called polyamides. Thermoplastic and usually found as fibres or used solid, as gears, zips and more recently as dyed jewellery.

Phenolic: abbreviated version of phenol – formaldehyde. Phenolic is usually reinforced with a filler, but cast phenolic has no filler and can be translucent. It can be easily coloured and is used decoratively for jewellery, radio cabinets and all kinds of ornaments.

Polycarbonate : A very tough thermoplastic, usually found as a substitute for glass, eg: vandal proof telephone kiosks, bullet proof shields, baby bottles and picnicware.

Polyesters : Complex ester compounds which are thermosetting and can be polymerized at room temperature, eg GRP.

Polymer : Another word for a plastic material: one which has been made from chains of molecules of one or more monomers. Polymers (plastics) are organic substances, made from hundreds or thousands of molecules linked together in a repeating chain pattern (also known as macromolecules).

Polymerization : The chemical process of linking monomers to form new compounds called polymers. For example, ethylene is polymerized into polyethylene, (polythene for short).

Polypropylene : A thermoplastic polymerized from propene, very close to polythene in molecular structure, but harder, stronger and less flexible.

Polystyrene : A brittle.water white thermoplastic polymerized from styrene – (phenylethylene). The brittleness is overcome by adding some butadiene, which results in toughened polystyrene also known as high impact polystyrene (HIPS), a copolymer of butadiene and styrene. Expanded polystyrene is the rigid white foam used for packaging.

Infrastructures are carefully studied before they are even built. Everyone who is involved has a thing to say about the project and every concern in whatever aspect has to be discussed. The project team often headed by an engineer plan ever corner of the project to make sure that apart from finishing on time, the entire process will be smooth sailing and the finished product something that the team can be proud of. Once everything is settled and there is someone to finance the project already then the city engineer’s office approves the plan. With a new building or infrastructure or underway, everybody is on their toes not until the very last piece is completed. Therefore, government offices tasked to do regular check-ups and rounds to all establishments, roads, bridges and the like to ensure that there are still safe to use or occupy. The establishments and contracted companies have administration officers that do their own checking to make sure they pass the government’s tests.

One of the tools used in checking are industrial metal detectors. Industrial metal detectors are the devices used to look for any trace of presence of metal in nonconductive materials like textiles, rubber sheet, oils or liquids, plastics, powder, wood products and concrete. It is usually difficult to look for metal among these sorts of things but industrial metal detectors will do that job for you. Now the responsibilities of people do not end on the blessing of the new building or whatever it is that was built, it actually goes on forever. The infrastructure has to stand the test of time, weather and natural disasters. Certainly there will be accidents but hopefully as a result of careful planning and execution it will not be attributed to the infrastructure and the people behind it.

Important elements in an infrastructure that can be detected by an industrial metal detector include buried electrical lines, piping behind a wall or reinforcing metal bar in concrete. These are important because even if they are not seen, if these things go wrong then any infrastructure will be in danger. It is best to make sure that they are well in place and are functioning well. There are special industrial metal detectors like underwater metal detectors obviously for use underwater. An airport metal detector is also a special kind of industrial metal detector because these kinds of industrial metal detector usually have specifications unique to them.

Metal detectors are the sort of things that will catch the fancy of little kids wanting to be scientists. Science television series or movies always has a thing or two about magnets and how it is so cool that nails get attached to them or on a more complex note how magnets can actually move an entire land mass.
These sorts of things ignite a certain degree of curiosity to young kids watching which is actually good because that means there is a bright future to the world of science. As time goes by technology sets in and magnets are not just the U-shaped objects during science class. Now magnets can be part of a new device without being obvious like metal detectors.

Metal detectors are like magnets because these devices can detect metal objects like guns and anything else that should be detected that maybe parts of weapons of destruction whether small scale or big scale. The usefulness of metal detectors is the reason why establishments, big and small alike, invest in things like walk through metal detector doors or hand held metal detectors. Just like spy cameras, these metal detectors makes it more comfortable for the owner to ensure the safety of his or her customers.

With the growing economy the material handling industry is also expecting a boom. Material handling equipment means equipment, including its supporting structures, auxiliary equipment and rigging devices, used to transport, lift, move or position persons, materials, goods. In any industrial environment such as a factory or warehouse, having the appropriate equipment on hand to be able to move items around safely is essential if you are to avoid accidents in the workplace that can be costly in terms of both lost productivity and damage. There are many different items of specialist industrial material handling equipment available that have been designed in order to give you and your staff the best possible chance of getting the job done properly.

Different kinds of materials have always needed to be treated in very different ways. It is important to ensure that different items that are reactive and hazardous are treated with the utmost care, while delicate materials such as glass need to be treated in such a way as to prevent them from becoming damaged. One of the main areas where high quality handling tools are particularly necessary is in the lifting and moving of heavy items that are beyond the ability of staff. In order to prevent serious injury to staff when lifting items it is necessary to install appropriate industrial material handling equipment in the form of a crane or other lifting device. One of the most popular designs of crane that is used in modern factories is the gantry. This device can be either fixed into place or used to move items laterally, or alternatively there are moving gantry cranes that can be used to lift and move heavy items as required.

Gantries are able to lift extremely heavy items and can be moved around easily by one or two people depending on the exact specification of the system that is installed. They are excellent for larger items, but there are alternatives such as the jib crane that are well suited to smaller lifting jobs. Like gantries, jib cranes are flexible industrial material handling equipment that can be used in a variety of ways. They are particularly well suited to moving smaller and heavy items, and are popular equipment to be used in the loading and unloading area of your operation. From larger items such as cranes through to simpler items such as carts and trolleys, there are many different aspects and types of industrial material handling equipment available that can make your workplace a much more efficient and safer place for staff.

The most important part of equipping your business with the appropriate industrial materials handling equipment is recognizing what items you need, and also, what items you do not need. Many smaller businesses make the mistake of installing equipment that they do not really need, and this has a major impact on profitability. When planning out your processes, you should fully investigate the best way of carrying out all aspects of the task. This will enable you to properly understand what equipment will actually benefit you and what will not. Invest in equipment that improves your work flow, and you are making positive changes that will give you a more efficient facility and greater profit in the long run. Selecting the right material handling equipment is vital, as it affects the operating cost and operational efficiency of a factory. The material to be handled, the plant building, and the issues of urgency and safety are a few factors that affect the decision on selecting the right material handling equipment.

An air compressor is a valuable piece of equipment for operating power tools. They are better in terms of efficiency and are easier on you. The type you need depends on the tools you will be using. There are many things that you should know about air compressors before you start to use them. First of all, you should know what air compressors are and how you can use them. Then, you should know some basic guidelines for using them and maintaining them. The first big thing for you to know about air compressors is what they are. Air is one of the hardest things to harness, however it is one of the strongest things. The wind is something that no one can see and no one can really touch, but it can do amazing things when it is blowing hard enough. This is what an air compressor really is. It is a way for you to harness the air and use it.

There are many different types of air compressors. Some of them are used in building and creating, and some of them are used in order to convert air to things that we can use, like breathable gas. For the most part, they work in the same way. The chamber is pressurized, and this pressure is what leads to the harnessing of the air. Because the way that the chambers inside of the machine work, and because of the very small nozzles, the air is forced out with great speed. This means that the air compressors can be hooked up to anything and then the air can be used. The air compressors themselves simply gather the air into them and then press the air very tightly. The machines are able to do this through pressure. Once the air has been held tightly, it can be released and can be very powerful.

You can use the air compressors for many things. One of the things that it is used for is to hook up to a nail gun. This helps to drive the nails into the wall at a much faster and stronger pace than a hammer. You can build something much faster this way and it is going to be much easier for you to use. A air compressor is also used in things like washing. It can be hooked up to spray washers or other items and when the air is released, the washers will do their job much better. This way, the air works to propel the water and it can get done much faster. There are also air compressors that aide people. For instance, one of the most popular types of air compressors is the kind that converts the gasses into breathable air so that a person can go diving and still be able to breathe. This is a very popular type of air compressors and it works in the same way.

Regardless of what type of air compressors you have, you need to know several things about keeping them. First of all, you must read the directions for the particular air compressors that you have very carefully, because it is very dangerous to use air compressors in ways for which they are not intended. You have to be very sure that they are only used as they should be used, and that they are always supervised.

This is another very important thing to remember. Air compressors can be very dangerous because of the air that can shoot out of them and also what they might be hooked up to. Air compressors themselves can be very dangerous. If they are exposed to too much heat, too much cold, or even to sharp objects, they could explode. They could be damaged, and they could cause much damage, Therefore, you have to be sure that you are never using them incorrectly and also that you are always storing them in exactly the right manner. This will help you make the most out of your air compressors and make everyone safe.

Safety should be your number one concern, and it is also an important part of keeping the air compressors around for along time. These are very expensive machines, so when you are using them you want to be able to do so for years. You don’t want to have to buy new air compressors each time the need comes up, so if you can keep the ones that you’ve got in good working order, you will be much happier. No matter what kind of air compressor you decide on for your job, the most important factor to consider is safety. You should always wear safety goggles, ear muffs, and other protective gear when using a power tool.
